Reiki Healing

Reiki Healing

What is Reiki healing, how does it work, and what results can you get? First of all, Reiki is spiritually guided life force energy. We are working with the energy of God/Creator/Source to access higher levels of healing. It is much like focused prayer and is often done by laying hands lightly on the person. A typical Reiki session is one hour long and we are spending that time in focused intention to bring about physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual healing. Many Reiki practitioners also pray before and during a Reiki healing session, asking for God’s help to accomplish the requested healing.

Reiki practitioners use a series of hand positions on a fully-clothed person laying on a massage table. The hand positions include working on the head, neck, shoulders, abdomen, pelvic bowl, knees, back, and feet. Hand positions can be done on the body or over the body. Reiki practitioners are careful not to touch any private areas and work over the body in these areas. Reiki practitioners are also trained to send Reiki at a distance to a person. In this way, Reiki is again like prayer in that you do not need to have a person physically present in order to pray for him or her. A Reiki practitioner can send healing energy not only at a distance but back in time to heal an issue or forward in time to help manifest good results. For example, we often send Reiki in advance of a surgery intending the surgery be a success.

Reiki works by releasing blockages in the aura and in and around the organs that disrupt the flow of chi or energy. After blockages are released, the Reiki practitioner fills in the area with the higher vibrational energy of Reiki.

The results one can receive vary by session and individual. Reiki practitioners can never promise any certain results. The more that the receiver intends to be open to the energy, the more energy will flow. Most people feel deeply relaxed and sleep better after a Reiki session. They also feel more peaceful and happy.

As of 2017, there are 68 articles published on Reiki research. Research with Reiki has shown it to have promising results with acute and chronic pain, stress, depression, anxiety, relaxation, and practitioner (usually nurses) well-being. Additionally, for patients undergoing chemotherapy, pain has been reduced and well-being has increased. A study with knee replacement showed significant pain reduction, reduced need for pain medication, and a reduced length of hospital stay. Another study showed that Reiki was as good as cognitive behavioral therapy to reduce depression in adolescents. There are currently 27 peer-reviewed research articles published on Reiki in the last 5 years. Check out The Center for Reiki Research.

Many of these studies included a control for sham Reiki practitioners, who are people who have not been trained in Reiki and who are pretending to do Reiki. While some benefits accrued for these sessions, they were minimal compared to sessions given by trained Reiki practitioners.
